"How to..."

Masonic Library & Museum Association - MLMA

An International Organization of Librarians, Archivists, Curators, & Directors

Dear friends, colleges and brothers –

I am happy to invite you all to assist in an exhibition the Memorial is going to display in time for the AASR Supreme Council joint session in August 2007.

To help our visitors better understand the history and purpose of the GWMNM we are assembling a display of images from US Masonic buildings built in the same era as the Memorial—ca. 1910 -1932. The images will come from full color “lithograph” postcards of the time. The Memorial will reprint and enlarge the postcards to approx. 18” x 20”.

Criteria for selection:

- The display will consist of one image per US Grand Lodge (51 total images).

- The image will be of a Masonic Temple (not Shrine, AASR or other) – this disqualifies the Indianapolis Scottish Rite Building

- The Temple must be built between 1910 and 1932. We are willing to stretch so a selected building could be finished in 1910 or even begun in 1932 – this however disqualifies the GLPA building in Philly.

- There must be a full color postcard image of the temple for us to use.

                                   (See the below samples)

- The building selected need not be a Grand Lodge building, but it can not be of a Masonic home, hospital or other charity. It must be a building where blue lodges meet.

- The building selected could have been torn down or sold, it need not still be in use or owned by Masons today.

Working with Masonic Library and Museum Association members (and hopefully as a joint sponsor) I would like each of you to select the best Masonic temple in your Grand Lodge Jurisdiction build between 1910 -1932 and send it to me.

Once I have compiled the list I will let all the members of the MLMA listserv review it. When the list is complete I will ask for donations or loans of the postcards to be used for the reproductions. The Memorial will pay for all other expenses.

The display of images will go along the walls of the first floor level (that surround Assembly Hall). Nearly all visitors move through these hall ways as they use the dinning rooms, auditorium see the Shrine rooms and exit the building.

Hopefully we can add brochure and other materials about the MLMA for visitors to know learn there maybe a Masonic library in their neck of the woods.

Thank you for all you help! I think this will be fun for everyone. Perhaps David can post the final selection images on the MLMA website for our own “virtual exhibition.”

Please email me with questions.

S&F,

Mark
